Goals for 2024

As of November 20 2024
 

  • Develop a DETAILED BLUEPRINT of what Acker Park should look like 25 years from now.

  • Trail maintenance and improvement working with Chris Hosking, Trail Master for Prescott.  Water Exits, crushed rock, placed in potential muddy areas.

  • J.S. Acker Kiosk (History of Acker’s Life and his gift to the Citizens of Prescott) Bench/Table acquisition and placement.

  • Keep the information pamphlets/doggy bags  available in the park’s entrances. Lynda

  • Help organize and participate in School Field Trips. Mary Layman, Tom Atkins,

  • Develop “special” areas to place benches, develop areas that will allow kids to play in the natural park, paths and openings that only they know about. Marium Maier, Tom Atkins

  • Help organize two “official work days” per year.

  • Interface with the Prescott Park and Recreation Foresters regarding the fire health of Acker Park. Develop "long term, sustainable" map of park.  Tom

  • Increase the number of Friends of Acker Park... especially with the folks who live right next to the park.  Barbara, Tom, Lynda.

  • Earth Day booth set up and interface with community.   22nd of April Saturday. Tom

  • Maintain current Drone image of the park. Michael Maier

  • Acker’s Birthday in August plaza celebration

  • Reduce the Horehound and other invasive weed populations. John

  • And a new one…  Provide Rip Rap rock wall to prevent erosion within the "Turn Around" area on South Washington.  Thanks to the LDS Just Serve group this was done in a flash, along with some stunning trail work!  Thanks to Michael for steming the Tumbleweed crop.

fewer rocks, better water control, new surface gravel.

IN PROGRESS, CHRIS HOSKING’S OVER THE HILL GANG HAS SPENT NUMEROUS HOURS WORKING ON THE ACKER PARK TRAILS.  THE GREEN TEAM HAS ALSO WORKED ON TRAILS. THERE IS STILL LOTS TO DO.

PLACEMENT OF NEW BENCHES

RETIRE OLD ORIGINAL BASIC WOOD BENCHES AND REPLACE WITH "CONVERTABLE BENCHES" / "LEGACY BENCHES" TO REPLACE  MANY OF THE FIRST GENERATION BENCHES.

ACKER VOLUNTEER WORK DAYS

“SPRING WORK DAY”, AND ONE MORE IN THE FALL...  WHEN IT COOLS DOWN A BIT. AROUND 20 FOLKS, MAINLY FROM THE UNITY GREEN TEAM +, DONATED 60 HOURS OF LABOR TO ENHANCE THE PARK.  ALSO, "JUST SERVE" AN LDS COMMUNITY SERVICE GROUP BUILD A RICRAC WALL TO STOP EROSION AND LAID MANY LINEAR METERS OF 3/4 INCH CRUSHED ROCK TO THE TRAILS TO REDUCE MUD DURING WET SEASONS.  THIS PROJECT IS ONGOING.
FALL:  ON THE 27 OF SEPTEMBER ~105 STUDENTS FROM LA TIERRA COMMUNITY SCHOOL ARE DOING A COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY AND WIPED OUT ~30 INDUSTRIAL BAGS OF HOREHOUND, AN INVASIVE WEED.

ASTRONOMY STAR NIGHT

JOHN MANGIMELI HAS BEEN VERY BUSY DURING THE DARK OF THE MOON TO PROVIDE INTERESTED CITIZENS A VERY INTERESTING INTRODUCTION TO THE NIGHT SKY.

FORESTERY PROJECT ALELOPATHIC TREATMENT OF NEW GROWTH

TWO CUT AREAS WHERE NEW GROWTH IS APPEARING HAVE BEEN TREATED WITH A ROOT KILLING SPRAY.  THIS SPRAY IS NOT TOXIC TO ANIMALS (HUMANS), HAS A SHORT HALF-LIFE... BUT HALTS THE REGROWTH OF THE SHRUBS.  MAKING AREAS MORE SUSTAINABLE
