Introducing the Acker Hackers

The Acker Hackers are a dedicated group of retired community members who volunteer their time and energy to help protect one of Prescott’s most treasured green spaces—JS Acker Memorial Park.

Each week, members contribute about two hours of hands-on labor focused on reducing wildfire risk in the park. Much of the work involves removing ladder fuels—the grasses and bushes beneath trees that allow fires to climb from the ground into the tree canopy. By carefully clearing this vegetation and de-laddering trees, the Acker Hackers help slow potential fires and protect the park, nearby homes, and the surrounding neighborhood.

This is meaningful, sometimes demanding work. It requires awareness, sure footing, and respect for sharp tools and natural terrain. Safety is taken seriously, and members look out for one another while working thoughtfully and responsibly.

Above all, the Acker Hackers are neighbors helping neighbors—giving back to the community, caring for the land, and making a real difference in reducing fire hazards while preserving the natural beauty of the park.
